Naked In Death by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts)

I had recently decided to give this series a try, then Amy J at The happily ever after... started an In Death Reading Challenge. I decided this was the perfect time to join my first challenge! (Little did I realize there are approximately 35 books in this series!)
This book was not at all what I expected. I thought it would be a contemporary romance about a cop with lots of sexytime. Not at all.
Naked In Death is set in the future with things like flying cars and voice control computers. The rain forest is gone and things like real coffee are indulgences for the rich. Eve Dallas is a tough-as-nails NYPD Lieutenant who investigates homicides. She's called in to investigate the murder of a prostitute (they're legal in the future) who also happens to be the granddaughter of a US Senator. As Eve is investigating all the leads, one of the suspects is a wealthy businessman, Roarke (that's it - one name only). He's immediately intrigued by her and pursues her romantically throughout the case. As more prostitutes are murdered, Eve is getting pressured by the Senator and her superior officers to solve the case. Throughout the storyline, we learn more about Eve's past, which is pretty tragic. Some of the secondary characters made me laugh, such as the male prostitute that kept referring to Eve as "Lieutenant Sugar" and her little old neighbor who's husband died while having pie. The ending was complicated and satisfying. *sigh* I think Roarke may soon be added to my list of Fictional Boyfriends.
I'm glad I decided to take this challenge and have already started on book 2, Glory In Death.

  1. You wont regret reading all 35 books in the in death series...i ADORE them! you may think once you've read one murder investigation you've read them all, but no! each book you learn more about the characters, i love getting a new in death to see what they're all up to, and i love the future aspect, flying cars but fake foods...seriously real chocolate is rare...EEK, that is not a future for me. HEE!

And Roarke...how i could wax lyrically about him, he is DEF a book boyfriend for all who reads him. just delish! Hope you continue reading and liking them. I heart Eve and Roarke and Summerset and Peabody and...haha you get the picture =)

  2. Oh yes, Roarke will be on your list..

I've only read the first four or five but I really enjoyed them. Honestly with 35 in the series - I have never heard anyone really criticize them!

  7. Hi :)
Yay! for reading the in Death series.
I adore them & mostly for the characters, the mystery/plot secondary. Best of all, Nora Roberts doesn't repeat herself with each book as some mystery series do. With each novel we are brought further into the lives, hearts and minds of the characters. I am so excited & happy for you to experience the joy of reading these novels.
    :)
    All the best,
    RKCharron

  8. I'm happy to see you give this series a go. I've been entranced by it for years now. Now whenever I read her newest release, it's like visiting friends.
There are so many things I love about it but a couple - seeing Eve grow and change as a woman and a person and see her slowly allowing people into her life. She seemed like such a lonely soul in Naked in Death.
And (hopefully this isn't a spoiler) seeing Eve and Roarke become such a devoted couple considering they started at opposite ends of the spectrum. And it's different to see the male protagonist being the more nurturing one of the couple.
It's amazing that when this series first started, some of the things seemed unbelievable - such as 'links where they could see each other as they talked. This was before the real advent of cell phones and now look at where we are now in relationship to them!!
I hope you post about all the books you read so we can travel along the journey with you - it will be almost like taking it again myself :-)
