I'm in the mood for...vampires? werewolves? lawyers? highland clan chieftains?

I'm looking at my ever-growing TBR and wondering what's wrong with me. I read quickly, and so I usually go through several books a week. I find that I have to "switch it up" or I get bored. For example, lately I've been in a Contemporary mood, but after reading a review for Joey Hills' Vampire series, I bought a copy and started reading. I couldn't get into it - I'm not in the mood for a supernatural book right now. So I read a Susan Andersen contemporary and devoured it! The thing is, I never know how long one "genre craving" is going to last so I just have to go with it.
I'm thinking about arranging my TBR piles into: Contemporary, Historical, Highlanders, Vampires, Shapeshifters, and Other. Is that too anal?

Sometimes I can't decide WHAT I'm in the mood for....I liked Lisa Kleypas' Sugar Daddy, and want to read Blue Eyed Devil but I'm still mad at Hardy. I've got the 2nd Sue Ellen Welfonder book, Bride of the Beast, but it's about a disfigured hero and I had a hard time with Elizabeth Hoyt's To Beguile a Beast, so I'm having a hard time reaching for SE Welfonder's book on my shelf (I wonder if I should skip it and go to the next? But that would mess up my "read them in order" OCD).

I also find that books I buy and then put off reading are usually the ones I end up loving! Soulless by Gail Carriger, Contemporaries in general (I fought that genre for months!), the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead, Addicted by Charlotte Featherstone, the In Death series (I didn't want to read Nora Roberts and so far have really liked the first two books), there are soooo many that once I start reading, I wonder why the heck I put it off!

  1. Oh I know how you feel. I have those moods now and again too.
After one I made my shelf into UF, Paranormal R, historical, miscellaneous with ties to those genres. Those are just those that happened to be on top, oh I could make more piles too cos if anyone is anal it is me ;)

You know what I have noticed, a good UF can bring a girl out of a funk

  2. OH Patti... I know what you mean. Now of course I have not been through as many genres as you... but I know what you mean. I just stare at my book piles... Hoping that one of the talks to me... But they just throw themselves at me. I tried to arrange my poor closet in abc order... but since I am limited on space, I could not do that. So, I have them by book size. IT DRIVES ME NUTS!!!! I so can not wait for a nice book case... Then I might just spend weeks looking at the shelf and deciding how to put the books, lmao!!! Ssshheessss!!!!

Well... I hope you find your nitch!
    Have a great day honey!

  3. Oh gawd, the dreaded TBR woes. Trust me Patti, you're not alone. Not by far.

Like you, I find myself experiencing "genre moods". Right now, I'm kind of on a fantasy/paranormal kick. A while back I was craving contemps then I'll be onto historicals. Sometimes I need something extra steamy while others I'm looking for a more intense and emotional read.

You definitely gotta mix things up or boredom can intrude on your reader love known as the "reading funk". That's the worst! Stear clear of that!

    :) VFG

  4. That's actually a good idea to arrange your TBR pile by genre. I can't stick to the same genre for the life of me-I have to switch it up.

  5. Hey Patti...

Preaching to the choir - this is one of the reason why I don't take books for review because my mood changes so often and I might be in the mood for a prince today and tomorrow I need a good old murder mystery...

There is no cure my dear and I can only add to your frustration - Have you tried any Suspense Romance lately - solid mystery with a little bit of smut on the side...

    Enjoy reorganizing oyur shelves...

  6. I too know how you feel, I am going through a historical romance fase right now, when I really should read some paranormal books but somehow I don't and then I read a book that has been on my shelf for over a year and I am wondering why I have not read it sooner... I am so not organised when it comes to my tbr pile! Good luck with your tbr pile.

  7. I know how you feel.
It normally happens to me after I've read a really great book - then I try to read something similar to that book in the hopes that it will be just as good. After I discovered Richelle Mead's 'Vampire Academy' I went on the hunt for all vampire YA books - I discovered the P.C. Cast series, but I couldn't even get through the first book, it was so bad.

It helps when I have you and Mandi to recommend good books to me, since my tastes are so similar to yours. But my reading habits definitely go through ebbs and flows... I don't really know what I'm in the mood for until I find myself halfway through a book, unable to put it down :)

  8. Oh yes, I can so relate to that! My problem is buying to many books (at once) while I still have a lot on the TBR shelf... then feeling guilty of wanting to read the newer books first...
And there's also the 'need' to 'save' great authors for later b/c I want to be certain to have a good read to look forward to!
Stressful, all the choices you have! :)
    Good luck, girl!
